ANKLE SPRAIN

  • What is ANKLE SPRAIN:
The joint which connects the foot with the lower leg is known as the
ankle joint. Twisting, turning or rolling of the ankle in an
unnatural/abnormal way leads to an ankle sprain or sprained ankle. We
can get our ankle sprained while running, walking or even getting up if
our foot is planted in an awkward position. It happens usually on an
uneven ground or when a very high amount of force is applied to the joint
    unusually.
An ankle sprain is a very common injury, more than 10 million cases of
an ankle sprain are recorded in India per year.

  • What are the SYMPTOMS of Ankle Sprain:
An ankle sprain is usually self-treatable and self-diagnosable. Lab tests
are required often but not always. Sprained ankle gets swollen, it pains
and allows limited motion. Instability, limping and bruising are common in
    an ankle sprain.

  • PERSISTENCE:
Normally, it is a short-term injury and it gets alright in a few days' terms
    or weeks' sometimes.

  • FIRST AID:
Ice can help reduce swelling, that is why icing is advised. Self-care is
very important. One should adopt RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and
Elevation) to treat a sprained ankle which is the most effective first aid
    treatment for sprains and strains.

  • How can Ankle Sprain be TREATED?:
Ankle sprains can be treated at home usually by resting, icing and pain
    relievers.
If the sprain is severe or if there are multiple sprains a doctor's
    consultation is advised.
To cure ankle sprain, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are taken
which help in relieving the pain, decreasing inflammation and reducing
    fever.

  • Devices which are used to get rid of a sprained ankle are:
  • Brace:- Applied to the body to help stabilize, protect or limit movements
    of a damaged ankle.
Elastic bandage:- Stretchy bandages are wrapped around sprains and
strains to provide support and compression to the ankle during recovery.
Splint:- It is a rigid accessory and is used to protect and stabilize the
    injured joint.

  • Therapies which help in normalizing the sprain are:

  • Stretching: can help improve flexibility.
Physical Therapy: can help restore the strength of the muscle and blood
    circulation.

  • Massages: relax tense muscles.

  • Different types of treatments used by specialists to treat sprains are:
Sports medicine: sports and exercise injuries are treated.
Physiotherapy: cures sprain by restoring muscle strength and function
    through exercise.
Primary Care Provider (PCP): prevents, diagnoses and treats the
    damage.
